Well, I decided to redesign my blog a little bit yesterday. I guess up until now I have not been too fussed in coming up with my own ideas and was happy with using modified wordpress themes.
The new site is a lot more like me, I like bright colors and simple layouts (unlike for instance Brad, who just likes bright colors
). I guess a touch of thanks is due to Olly, James and Alex for forcing me to not be lazy when it comes to layouts, and I know I don’t really rate basic web design as being particularly interesting or skillful but I quite enjoyed doing this.
Todo list: Fix the graphic at the top and put the h1 in the block element, come up with a better sidebar icon.
Created with open source tools and should be compliant, maybe par the random image flickr thing I wrote on the top right.

Dude! You totally need a favicon! Also the red of this comment box is a bit funny-coloured.

Brad, it is really fancy, but Olly and I were trying to figure out how to use it the other day - it is a bit bat shit crazy (in a cool way though)!

Please provide me with some constructive criticisms cause I’m in the middle of redoing the layout (but not the design as such).

Sorry Brad I wasn’t dissing your blog, like you say at the bottom “most people who know me would identify this as a ‘Brad’ webpage”.
My main problem with your design is the previous posts are completely disconnected to the current post, apart from being the same colour. Things like links to external sites have the same emphasis as the actual content too, which means you have to look closely at most things before you can decide if they are related to the blog content. Maybe this is what you were after? I had to look at your page for say 10-15 seconds until I worked out what was going on - Its a really nice design though.

Sorry, wanted to edit that last post of mine and put a winky face beside it but didn’t want to add another useless comment to your site. The main reason I redoing the layout is for the very fault you listed! I really wasn’t being serious with the first post as I know my site has layout issues but as I was gonna redo it a bit I thought I may as well ask for some criticism

I need a favicon, this is true I didn’t even notice that I didn’t have one!
Going to have to sort out this comments bit too.

Liking it Sandy! Especially the ironic splat.
The colours down the side is very original, but I’d like to see it come together in the footer.
Agree that the pink doesn’t fit - maybe use a light yella?
Bradlay - I like your design, but I think the diagonal stripes on the grey is a stripe too far. I’d go just a solid
colour there to let the other stripes stand out.
I can’t talk - my website looks like this.

Is this any better : layout 2
I doubt the functionality of the site works at that url, the comments and search haven’t been redone and I’m still tweaking the colours but is that a bit easier to use/understand?

Your new layout is much better Brad, in my opinion.
